FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do you only treat pregnant & postpartum women?
No! We treat people of all genders and anatomies, including cisgender, transgender, and nonbinary individuals. Our primary expertise is in vulvar anatomy and in caring for those who identify as women (including trans women) and those who have experienced pregnancy and birth (including trans and nonbinary people). We also treat pelvic floor conditions in people with penis anatomy when symptoms are part of a broader pelvic health concern; however, we do not treat primary sexual dysfunction (such as erectile dysfunction alone) without a full medical evaluation and referral.
Can I use my insurance coverage at Pelvio?
We are considered Out of Network providers so we do not submit claims to insurance. This means that you would pay for the cost of service at the time of each visit. After we finish your documentation, we'll give you a Superbill. You'll submit the Superbill to your insurance under your Out of Network Physical Therapy benefits and your insurance company will reimburse you for the cost of services. How much they reimburse or if they reimburse at all depends on your specific benefit plan.
What if I have Medicare?
We do not provide Medicare-covered physical therapy services and do not bill Medicare or insurance. For people with Medicare coverage, we offer wellness-based services only, such as education, fitness, prevention, and movement support. These services are not covered by Medicare, and payment is private pay. If you are seeking Medicare-covered physical therapy for a medical condition or injury, a Medicare-enrolled provider would be the best option. Please feel free to reach out and we can help direct you to a local Medicare-enrolled PT.
Why don't Pelvic Floor PT companies "take" insurance?
Good question - We know it's frustrating. In today's healthcare landscape, to put it bluntly, insurance companies do not pay physical therapists as much as they pay for other healthcare services. Because of this - in order to pay their bills, pay good clinicians, and make any profit, many outpatient PT companies have to double or triple book their patient slots or see their patients for 30-45 minutes at a time. This can make it hard to deliver quality care.

At Pelvio, we prefer to see our patients one-on-one for a full hour so we are not motivated by quantity of patients over quality of patient care.
In addition to the financial aspect, insurance companies have the power to dictate what type of care a patient receives and quite frankly, we don't want to be told what is good for our patients by someone who doesn't know them. This way, we can keep patient care individualized and personal.

Do I need a script from my physician to see a PT at Pelvio?
Yes, but not initially. In the state of Pennsylvania, in order to practice physical therapy, a physical therapist must have a script from a physician, unless the PT has a special license called Direct Access. At Pelvio, most of our physical therapists have their Direct Access Licenses, which means they can see a patient without a script from a physician for 30 days. But, we will need a script after 30 days. You can ask your physician for a script or we can always reach out to your provider to obtain one for you!
How is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy different than "regular" Physical Therapy?
Because we specialize in the treatment of the pelvic floor muscle group, our assessment and treatment techniques involve an internal evaluation. We use one gloved finger inserted in the vaginal or rectal canal to assess the musculature within the pelvis. After that, it looks like any other PT visit - we'll prescribe exercises, perform manual therapy, and gradually progress your home program in order to meet your goals! See our Services page for more details on what services we offer!
*It is important to note that we do not have to do an internal evaluation on the first visit or even at all. It does give us the most amount of information about what is going on with your pelvic floor, but we can utilize other techniques if it makes you uncomfortable.
What should I wear to a treatment session at Pelvio?
Wear something you are comfortable moving in! Because we will likely be asking you to undress from the waist down, it is recommended to wear a distinct top and bottom set as opposed to a dress/romper/jumpsuit, but we are very adept at strategic draping! We can offer any linens or towels to ensure you are covered to your comfort.
Can I come to my treatment session if I am on my period?
Yes! Many times, we can find more information for your treatment if we assess your pelvis during different phases of your menstrual cycle. But if it makes you uncomfortable, we TOTALLY understand a reschedule.
Can I bring my baby to my treatment session?
Of course! We have play mats, toys, a changing table, and a feeding suite in one of our bathrooms. We can involve your baby in your physical therapy program, we can whisper if they're sleeping, or we can hold them while you're exercising (that's our favorite option TBH).
How many sessions will I need?
That depends, but ultimately you're the decision maker. We typically see our patients once a week for some extended period of time, then try to give you more homework to see us less frequently. For example, we might plan for once a week for 6 weeks, then every other week for 8 weeks and then once a month for 3 months. We keep our plans of care tailored toward your goals so once your goals are met, we'll discharge you! If you're pregnant, it works a little differently, but again, you're in charge! If you want more specifics, submit a contact form here and we'll text or call you ASAP!
